From the Archive: On this day, 16 April 1926. "Famous Dancer at the Central Railway Station" reported the Herald. The caption reads "Pavlova arrives in Sydney: Reading from left to right: Mr. John Tait, M Lucien Wurmser (musical director), Madame Pavlova, M. Dandre, and M. Novikoff". A few days later the Herald reported the opening night in Sydney as a triumph: "The genius of Anna Pavlova captivated a great audience at Her Majesty's Theatre on Saturday night, just as it has held under a spell the public of the great cities of Europe and America...The audience, crowded every part of the theatre, and voiced its enthusiasm at many points of the performance by imperative re-calls, and at the end of the night by continued cheering, which ceased only when the band sounded the first notes of the National Anthem." This photo comes from Fairfax's Glass Plate Negative Collection that has recently been donated to the National Library.
