During Dr. Jean Felix's recent observation of Hirwa group in Volcanoes National Park, the gorillas were using the backs of their hands to drink water- a rare sight, as gorillas usually get their fluids from the vegetation they eat. Fossey Fund researchers and trackers can identify the individual gorillas we monitor by their unique “nose prints,” the pattern of wrinkles on their noses. New field staff in training memorize the patterns from photos.

The Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education (GRACE) center in DR Congo cares for 15 Eastern Lowland (Grauer's) gorillas, including Shamavu, a young male who was confiscated as an infant from poachers who carried him in a small backpack for a month as they attempted to sell him. Great Ape Moment: A Western Lowland gorilla at the Bristol Zoo in the UK cuddles a duckling that strayed into its enclosure. The duckling exited the encounter unharmed.
