Russia is the first power to choose its path, with tragic ends. Underlying its invasion of Ukraine is the Kremlin’s judgement that a freedom-based model has abysmally failed in Russia, and the only way to preserve its great power status is to revert to a pre-Gorbachev state of play.
It is no coincidence that Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 just as a prolonged oil and gas boom imploded. The Kremlin found it could no longer keep Russians on side through funnelling the proceeds to state investment and pensions.
A country that rose to greatness by deploying its huge manpower at mass scale in both military and industry has had to confront the reality that, due to botched education reforms, a collapse in science funding, and a hopelessly underdeveloped entrepreneurial culture, its citizens are dismally ill-equipped to compete in the new knowledge economy.
The Kremlin has responded to this dilemma by reverting back to an autocratic, imperialistic model that prioritises military build-up and territorial expansion over prosperity.
The killer question is whether ordinary Russians will accept this U-turn. After all, a generation ago, their parents abandoned such a model, exhausted by its lies, corruption and sacrificial horrors
