Here the children meet every morning and the young women meet every afternoon. The message of this modest place is that it is a place of safety for all. The emphasis for the children is early development. Enthusiastic crowds flooded into #WashingtonSquarePark in Manhattan tonight to hear @berniesanders speak. The rally, which started with performances by Vampire Weekend and @dirtyprojectors, had the feel of a music festival. As he stood in the shadow of the @nyuniversity campus, @berniesanders came down particularly hard on student debt. After a 28-year wait, the @pepsi sign in Long Island City — a dazzling swirl of red curlicue letters that evokes memories of innocent days of summer, heavy industry in Queens and a spectacular disregard for the waterfront in the mid-20th century — now has official New York City landmark status. The sign, photographed here by @benjaminnorman, has been under consideration by the Landmarks Preservation Commission since 1988. At that time, it stood atop @pepsi’s enormous bottling plant on the East River, where it’d been since 1940. After suffering heavy damage in a winter storm, it was reconstructed in 1993. When @pepsi closed the plant 6 years later, the company sold all but a 60-by-200-foot parcel of its 21-acre property. That small piece of land accommodated the relocated sign, which @pepsi was canny enough to recognize as a marketing opportunity. @ Pepsi Cola Sign

The Presidio, San Francisco, California, 2015 by @simoncroberts. The photograph is one of several I have featured in the April 2016 issue of the magazine alongside the story 'How Urban Parks Are Bringing Nature Closer To Home' by Ken Otterbourg. Strategically located at the entrance to San Francisco Bay, the Presidio park was a military outpost for 218 years. Unlike other parks in the US national system, it receives no federal money. Most revenue comes from renting out former military buildings. Here, sunset and low tide lure walkers to Marshall’s Beach, which offers extensive views of the Golden Gate Bridge. Until the mid 1600s urban parks were private; the exclusive domain of wealthy families and royalty. Today urban parks are increasingly being created from reclaimed lands in and around cities. Viewed as essential to the wellbeing of residents and as an effective way to promote economic development, they represent a new imaginative era of experimentation. #urbanparks

Photo by @TimLaman. Exploring Indonesia’s remote Raja Ampat Archipelago by traditional Phinisi Boat, I photographed this huge anvil shaped thundercloud at sunset one day. These boats are the traditional inter-island vessels in Indonesia, still in use today for cargo, but also for travelers and diving trips. They are a great way to travel and give you that feeling of connection with the explorers of past generations. The Raja Ampat region around the western end of Papua harbors the worlds richest marine biodiversity, and we were on a mission to document it.
