The Graham House built over a water feature in 1963 in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Designed by the great Canadian architect Arthur Erikson (1924-2009). It was demolished by a developer in 2007 although by the end after many additions, it was not the house seen in the photo. You can read about its demise here: http://www.vanmag.com/News_and_Features/City_Life/Heritage_on_the_Rocks. It's a cautionary tale. http://llundqvistld.tumblr.com/post/6632209923

Outdoor rooms don't have to be closed in on all sides. This Gold medal winning one from RHS Show Tatton Park 2011 by Silva Timber uses western red cedar to clad the underside of the cantilevered roof. The roof covers an outdoor kitchen which won't suit everyone granted but the fireplace is something everyone can make use of. Western red cedar is among the best choice for outdoors out of the many softwoods available because of its naturally high resistance to rot and insect damage. It can be oiled to maintain its just built look or can be let to silver down naturally without loosing and strength.
