As with all things involving plastic use your own good judgement. Use BPA FREE PLASTIC. These are clever ideas that my son has tried and successfully used in projects and inside of window ledges inside the home. We preferred to keep the lids and drill 2 holes in the lid then thread some cord through to suck up the water. We also drilled the 3 holes for version 1 very close to the neck of the bottle. This helped to prevent overflow on the outside of the bottom half of the bottle, when watering from the top.
