Health Wagon began its journey in 1980 with a Volkswagen Beetle, navigating the rugged roads of Appalachia. This humble start marked the inception of what would evolve into a pioneering rural healthcare provider in America, founded by Sister Bernie Kenny. Today, it is a comprehensive healthcare network at the forefront of rural health innovation. Originally a mobile clinic, St. Mary's Health Wagon has expanded to include two stationary clinics, four mobile units, a full-service pharmacy, and a state-of-the-art dental facility. As the nation’s oldest mobile free clinic, it serves as an essential healthcare safety net for southwestern Virginia's most vulnerable populations, offering services through nearly 29,000 patient encounters in 2024. Each encounter reflects a significant impact on community health. Health Wagon operates in a region that embodies stark healthcare disparities.
