The Tragic Real Life Story Of The Doobie Brothers

When it comes to classic rock bands, the Doobie Brothers have reached the mountain top and have been through every type of rock 'n' roll fiasco one can imagine. They've won Grammy Awards, sold nearly 50 million records worldwide, gotten numerous songs in the Top 10 singles and Top 40 hits, been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and even received keys to the city, as per TheDoobieBrothers.com and Rolling Stone. Since the 1970s, the band has helped define the sound of classic rock, veered off into other genres, and became known for creating a new one, dubbed, "yacht rock." Whether or not they've been aware of the fancy-sounding genre, or even appreciate the term, is another story.

The Doobie Brothers will finally get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year, and rightly so. They've given us songs like Black Water, Listen To The Music, Long Train Runnin', Takin' It to the Streets, and more. According to the band's website, the group has also won four Grammy Awards and has sold more than 48 million records worldwide.

Here's How Much The Doobie Brothers Are Really Worth

The Doobie Brothers have gone through a lot of members over the years, and tragically, none of then have actually been called Doobie. (As Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic notes, their name is actually a pot reference.) Some of them have quit the band, others have died, and yet, the Doobie machine rocks on after nearly five decades, with just a few years' break in the 1980s. Today, the band consists of Tom Johnston, Patrick Simmons, Michael McDonald, John McFee, and a bunch of touring members, and their legend lives on to the point that they were inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.

If all goes well (and honestly, at this point, who knows?) The Doobie Brothers will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in November 2020, part of a class that will include the late Whitney Houston and Depeche Mode, says the Hall's website. It's been a long time coming for a band with remarkable resiliency and staying power over the course of nearly 50 years in the business. They have a list of hits as long as your arm, and are often assigned to the category of "yacht rock" — "smooth music," in other circles — and are hoping to launch a 50th anniversary tour in 2021, with an important addition to the lineup: keyboardist, singer, and songwriter Michael McDonald.
