Happy Birthday to Chester Burton Atkins, who was born on June 20, 1924 (he would have been 90). Chet took the guitar, added complex fingerpicking to traditional country playing, and made the instrument a multi-piece symphony by using the fingers of his right hand to play different rhythms on different strings. Building on the Merle Travis technique of thumb and forefinger picking, Chet used his thumb and three fingers to get more patterns and more melody lines out of his guitar. His playing inspired everyone from Elvis Presley and Jerry Reed (who created his own form of fingerpicking) to Mark Knopfler and Tommy Emmanuel. In addition to his stellar guitar playing, Chet also produced hundreds of records both in Hollywood and Nashville, a job that earned him credit for taking the twang out of country guitar and creating the modern Nashville Sound. Here’s a great video of Chester with Jerry Reed playing "Jerry's Breakdown" in 1975. No matter what style of guitar you play, you have got to be impressed by these two guitarists just letting loose on their instruments.
