This Cute Robot Arm Is Small Enough to Sit on Your Desk
This friend could be yours for just a few hundred bucks thanks to a new Indiegogo campaign.
Meet your new best friend: a robot arm that can pass you a drink or blow air at you with a tiny fan. The uArm, an adorable robot arm from uFactory, is a precise, open source robot arm that's small enough to fit on your desk.
The uArm is currently seeking funding on Indiegogo, where it's already raised over $300,000. The arm is programmable via a variety of methods and can use a bunch of different attachments like suction cups and a claw grabber. Many crowd funding campaigns promise amazing gadgets only to disappoint customers, but uFactory has produced similar robots in the past successfully.
There are two versions of the yet-to-be-built uArm available through the Indigogo campaign. The uArm Pro, which is currently going for $489, is more dexterous, with a repeatability of .02 millimeters (that's the degree of change in motion you can expect when the arm repeats the same motion over and over) and a stepper motor. The regular uArm Swift goes for $289 and has a repeatability of 5mm and a less powerful motor. The robot is capable of taking input from a Leap Motion gestural control sensor and includes wheels it can use to roll itself around.
The robot will be ready by May, just in time to break out the mini-fan attachment to cool you down during the summer.
