It ain’t easy being a legend. Here’s 10 ways, you too, can be a legend!

1. Learn How to Ride a Motorcycle

I’m not talking about a Harley Davidson either. Save those for retirees, biker gangs and people having midlife crises. Nope, I’m talking about a real machine like the BMW 1200 GS pictured above that will get you into the wilderness and back. There’s a lot of things that a Harley is good for, like a paperweight for instance, but offroad bikes will bruise and batter you…and you’ll enjoy every freakin’ minute of it.

2. Learn How to Craft an Amazing Cocktail

Can you make an incredible cocktail? I’m not talking about a fucking Midori Sour or an Appletini for Christ’s sake. I’m talking about a cocktail that is well-balanced, delicious, and boozy. My go to cocktail is The Manhattan; Bourbon Whiskey, Sweet Vermouth, Angostura Bitters, and a Maraschino Cherry. Shake that baby up and serve it straight up in a cocktail glass. You can garnish with an orange twist if necessary, but you don’t have to. Sit back with some friends and enjoy!

3. Channel Your Creativity

Seriously, Ansel Adams is my fucking hero. His iconic images of the west, in particular Yosemite and The Sierra Nevada made nature photography an art form. He also had a great beard. Do you love photography, well buy a camera and get out there and start learning how to use it! Don’t stop there though, draw, paint, etch, use pastels, or learn watercolor. Your life will be the better for it…trust me.

4. Learn How to Build Something

There’s something fucking cool about using hand tools and making something yourself. If you’ve never done any woodwork before, start small– like this cheeseboard above. Give them as gifts complete with some nice crackers, a stick of artisan salami, and a fresh, local cheese. People will think you’re a legend, and they’d be right.

5. Grow a Beard

This is my friend Luis from Lost World Expedition he’s been growing this beard for months while overlanding through South America. His beard makes all other beards jealous. At least once in your life you should lose that razor and let nature take its course on your face. You won’t be sorry…a beard says a lot about you, like you don’t take shit from anyone. Beards are a commitment to masculinity, if you don’t believe me, grow one and find out for yourself. It’ll give you superpowers.

6. Be Worldly

Know what’s happening in the world, understand that your country, state, city, town is not the be-all-end-all of existence. Be willing to travel and learn a new language, observe an unknown culture, or simply get lost in a city and people watch. Get yourself a passport as soon as humanly possible– fill the pages with stamps from other countries. Realize that the world is indeed a very, very small place and people are inherently good. Repeat.

7. Be Educated

Always be learning. I don’t give a shit if you go to college, get an apprenticeship as a plumber, or teach yourself code. Being educated is far more cool than being an idiot with an opinion. Learn how to fix your vehicle, learn how to build a website, find the Higgs Boson, whatever you do be an expert, but don’t be a douche about it.

8. Learn How to Drink Whisk(e)y

I don’t care which whiskey, or whisky for that matter, you call your own. Be it a nice smokey single malt whisky from Isle of Islay, a bold spicy rye bourbon from Kentucky, or a smooth Tennessee sipping whiskey. Find your whiskey and embrace it. Let it become your friend. Learn to detect notes of toffee, caramel, flowers or fruit. Let the experience take you somewhere else, if just for a few minutes. Don’t mix it with OJ or Coke. The best thing to mix with your whiskey is water…or more whiskey.

9. Drive Somewhere Very Remote

There’s an exhilarating feeling planning and executing an offroad journey to somewhere very remote. There’s so many variables, so many things that can go wrong, and so many things that could possibly be…legendary. Find a spot on the map, plan your route, drive there and experience life off the beaten track. Life is about adventure!

10. Help Others

Life is empty if you’re not helping others. Volunteer in your community. Teach a kid to read, help rebuild a playground, deliver food to the elderly, coach a football team. Being legendary is about more than your world, take the time to make sure others can be legendary too. 10 ways to be a legend
