After US President Donald Trump’s tariff threats, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged people to travel domestically. It worked; February saw a 13% drop in air travel and a 23% decline in land crossings to the US compared to last year, according to Statistics Canada. Beyond tariffs, Canadians cited Trump’s annexation threats and reports of tourist detentions as reasons for avoiding US travel. This decline could cost the US economy billions, with even a 10% drop in Canadian visits potentially leading to $2 billion in lost spending and 14,000 job losses. Some Canadians canceled US trips in favor of domestic travel, while others chose destinations like Spain due to border security concerns. Canadian airlines are shifting focus, with WestJet and Flair Airlines reducing US flights in favor of Mexico and the Caribbean. In Las Vegas, Canadian arrivals fell 9.4% in February, while New York saw an 11% drop. Meanwhile, spending by Canadians in US border towns like Whitefish, Montana, declined 14%. Buffalo, which relies on Canadian day-trippers, saw bridge traffic drop 14%, and website visits from Canada have fallen 52% since the tariff debate began. Officials hope to revive Canadian tourism with a future “Buffalo Loves Canada” campaign.
