A particularly virulent strain of transphobia spread through state legislatures in 2022. LGBTQ+ people have often been in conservative political crosshairs, but this onslaught on trans kids’ education and health care rights shows renewed willingness to use queer and trans issues as fuel to fire up evangelical voters. With these bills, attacks on drag culture and a question mark on marriage equality, it’s clear that this year’s ballot is a referendum on queer and trans progress.
