APOD: Bird Sun Dog (2013 May 27) Image Credit & Copyright: Juan Manuel Pérez Rayego http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130527.html Explanation: Have you ever seen a little rainbow off to the side of the Sun? Rare but rewarding to see, such spectacles are known as sundogs, mock suns or parhelia. Sundogs are just sunlight refracting through hexagonal falling ice crystals in the Earth's atmosphere. When thin ice crystals flitter down nearly horizontally, they best refract sunlight sideways and create sundogs. Alternatively, randomly oriented ice crystals may create a complete circular sun halo. Sundogs occur 22 degrees to each side of a setting or rising Sun, although sometimes nearby clouds can block one or both. The above image was taken through a polarizing filter during October 2012 in Mérida, Spain. Little-Known Second Verses of 10 Children's Songs

Welcome To The Oval Office, Madam President

The process that causes lightning bolts to form is still a mystery. One theory states that cosmic rays play a role by ionizing the clouds, and the free electrons start a high-energy chain reaction that discharges into a lightning bolt. There is new evidence to help back up this theory. Radio waves from nearly 4,000 lightning strikes were analyzed and appear to match the model. There are some other inconsistencies to be worked out, but this may be a step in the right direction toward understanding lightning. Question Of The Week: Do You Hear Music When You Dream?

I'm always astonished when people (ie. Bob Boilen) tell me they either never dream or never remember their dreams. My dream world is so involved, vivid and comical I sometimes have a hard time remembering whether something actually happened or existed only in my unconscious imagination.
Music …

20 Years Ago Biz Markie Got The Last Laugh

In the late 1980s, no clique in New York seemed more dominant than the Juice Crew. Assembled by producer Marley Marl, the group's core included the larger-than-life spectacle that was Big Daddy Kane, the slippery tongued Masta Ace, the profanely prickly Roxanne Shante and the clown prince, Biz …

'Smart' story-telling pajamas invented by father of 6

As a dad who loves to read to his kids at bedtime, I was a little skeptical about Smart PJs. They're certainly clever: Each of the jammies' 47 unique dot patterns triggers a story or an animal lesson when the kid scans it with a smartphone or tablet. But I am wary of products that may outsource …

Make your old iPhone run like new

My friend is convinced that the slowing of his iPhone 4S is part of a vast Apple conspiracy. I'm not completely persuaded.
I mean, sure Apple has sent out updates to iOS that are arguably a step in the wrong direction, like that whole Apple Maps fiasco. But I believe the main culprit for decreasing …
