For every dollar you need, you should have $25 in your portfolio balance. That’s how much you need. Let’s say you can live comfortably on $40,000 per year after you retire. In that case you need a minimum of $1,000,000 in your portfolio balance. But make sure you factor in things like inflation, medical expenses and travel plans. You may find that a million is the bare minimum.
