This Day in Harley-Davidson History – September 28, 1935 – Earl and Dot Robinson set transcontinental sidecar record Earl and Dot Robinson set the transcontinental sidecar record, completing the trip from L.A. to New York in 89 hours and 58 minutes. In the same month that Earl broke the single-rider transcontinental record from New York to LA on his faithful 1935 Harley-Davidson 45 (77 hours, 53 minutes), the couple set out on the return trip together. This adventure was made on a 1935 H-D 74 model with a Goulding sidecar attached, which was manufactured by Jim Goulding, Dot’s father. From Los Angeles, the Robinsons entered Las Vegas on the tail end of one of the hardest rainstorms in thirty years. Throughout Wyoming and Nebraska, they encountered the coldest weather that people in that section of the country had ever experienced at that time of the year. Battling eastward from Peoria, Illinois, they become resigned to the poor weather which continued over the mountain route to Pennsylvania and into New York City. One benefit of the two-person trip was that they were able to take turns grabbing some sleep on the fly when riding in the sidecar. Dot was at the handlebars fully 60 per cent of the time, including a 12-hour stretch through a driving rainstorm. Earl admitted that his wife was better at handling the sidecar outfit, especially in rainy weather. A secret of their success, they claimed, “The fact that we always use Harley-Davidson Oil.” To learn more about the history of Harley-Davidson, please visit our website www.h-dmuseum.com
