The steel blue surface of Crater Lake mirrors winter skies over Cradle Mountain in this cool shot from @my_jouney_around_tasmania. Despite its name, Crater Lake is not a volcanic crater; it was formed by the action of glacial ice during previous ice ages. In autumn, the steep slopes that surround this beautiful lake are ablaze with the glorious colours of Tasmania's native Diciduous beech, or fagus. The dark colour of the water, like so many lakes and streams throughout western Tasmania, is the result of tanins leached from buttongrass and tea tree vegetation. The two-hour circuit walk to Crater Lake from the Dove Lake carpark is one of several in the immediate area of Tassie's iconic mountain. Thanks for tagging #discovertasmania, Sharna.

Fiery dawn skies rise over the imposing silhouettes of the Acropolis in Tassie's Central Highlands. These rugged and remote mountains are part of the Du Cane Range in the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and are a popular side trip for those tackling the 6-day trek of Tassie's infamous Overland Track. As winter wanes and we head in our warmer spring and summer months, many intrepid walkers prepare to take advantage of the longer days as they take on this iconic alpine trek. For the adventurous (and well-prepared) walker, there's still time to to venture into this magical landscape during our snowy winter months, where iced-over lakes and snow-capped peaks are gaurenteed to take your breath away! A fresh winter coat adorns Barn Bluff in this stunning shot by acclaimed Tasmanian photographer, Grant Dixon. The fourth highest peak in Tassie, Barn Bluff’s distinctive shape makes it one of Tassie most recognised landscapes. It’s located within the northern end of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and can be easily seen from across the Cradle Plateau. Its emergency on the horizon is a highlight for walkers on the early stages of the world-famous Overland Track. The summit is reached via a steep path that includes some scrambling over dolerite boulders. It’s a popular side-trip for hikers and mountaineers alike. A stunning photo, Grant. 'Waldheim' Cradle Mountain Tasmania. A real treat, when we were joined by our lady Aurora Australis, whilst out stargazing at Cradle Mountain on Saturday night. After enjoying hot Lattès under the stars at Dove Lake, @tassieoutnabout and I decided to venture on and visit the famous Waldheim Chalet. Rising behind the Chalet is a star studded sky, stained with the colours of the Aurora and a bright Milky Way. With a little remaining snow in the foreground, a quick light paint, this scene was complete. By then temperatures had dropped to -4° so it was home to thaw out. Love this place...Tassie you are just so great.! #lovethisplace #tasmania #cradlemountain#waldheimchalet#aurora

When visiting the sprawling valleys of Northwest Tassie, it's hard not to be taken aback by the sheer beauty around every corner. @cassandrasheehanphotography discovered this recently while road-tripping through the region, taking in the majestic views of a snow-dusted Mount Roland. One of the most prominent peaks in the area, Mount Roland stands proudly at 1,234m over the rural landscape near the township of Sheffield. This picturesque region, on the northern edge of the Great Western Tiers, is a land filled with history and adventure. Whether you're keen for an afternoon at a museum, a day on the hiking trail or a week of wine tasting, you're bound to find something here that will tickle your fancy! #DiscoverTasmania #seeaustralia

Wynyard, Town in Tasmania, Australia. . Wynyard is a rural town on the north-west coast of Tasmania, Australia 16 kilometres west of Burnie on the Bass Highway at the mouth of the Inglis River. At the 2011 census Wynyard had an urban population of 5,061 and a total greater population of 5,990. . The Tommeginner were a tribe of Indigenous Australians who lived in the region along the coastline until soon after the arrival of Europeans in the 19th century. As hunter-gatherers, the Tommeginner hunted for game on the plains inland, but they also built tidal fish traps with rocks close to the shore at Fossil Bluff which are still evident today. Wynyard was probably named after Major-General Edward Buckley Wynyard in the early 1850s. . #townofaustralia #wynyard #history #northwesttasmania #sky #cloud #ocean #bassstrait #indigenous #golfclub #travelgram #cruising_australia #tassiepics #thisistassie #focusaustralia #exploreaustralia #seetasmania #seeaustralia #australia_shotz #discovertasmania #instatasmania #tasmaniagram #instatassie #australiagram #ig_australia #wow_australia2016 #tassielife #aussiephotos #unlimited_australia

Time to brave the elements and sneak a midnight peek out of your tent while camping in Tassie’s World Heritage wilderness… Pretty impressive, huh? This otherworldly shot from @dsallai was recently taken on the Ducane Range, deep within the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. The distinctive silhouette is of Mount Geryon – the twelfth highest mountain in Tasmania and one of numerous impressive peaks in the immediate vicinity. Expeditions into this magical part of the world can be planned and undertaken independently, or professionally guided and catered by one of several award-winning operators. Whichever option you choose, it’s guaranteed to be a truly memorable adventure. Thanks for tagging #discovertasmania, Daniel.

This is the replica of the Waldheim Chalet originally built in 1912 by Gustav Weindorfer. The name means 'Home in the Forest' and it was built as a place for visitors to stay in the valley, which he loved and was described by him as a 'veritable Eldorado for the botanist'. 🌲

The fiery hues of dusk painting the jagged peaks of the Acropolis, as it stands proudly over the still waters of Lake Elysia in the Du Cane Range. @dsallai donned his hiking boots and set out through this remote region in Tasmania's Central highlands, on a mission to capture some of Tassie's wildest and most impressive scenery. This area, in the bowl-like cirque of the Du Cane Range, was sculpted by glaciers thousands of years ago. It is a famous side-trip on the iconic, 6-day Overland Track and it is home to many fantastically named peaks, including Mount Geryon, The Parthenon, Mount Eros, and Mount Hyperion. The beauty of Pencil Pine Cascades, brilliantly captured yesterday in our winter wonderland by @camblakephotography. A short boardwalk stroll, this series of cascades are located on the boundary of the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Area and the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. It’s just one attraction on a network of short walks around the park's entrance that feature tranquil creekside grottos, rainforest tunnels and if you’re really lucky, spontaneous wildlife encounters. It’s the perfect prelude to the drama and majesty of the main attraction – the dual peaks of Cradle Mountain! Golden hour light illuminating the craggy peaks of Mount Roland as captured here by @theotherwayhome from the tranquil hills of Lower Wilmot. This majestic mountain dominates the horizon in this @TasmaniasNorthWest view, standing at 1,234m over a landscape filled with classic coastal drives, food trails, stunning national parks and beautiful nature reserves. It is an area with a wealth of fascinating stories, from great museums to significant Aboriginal heritage sites, and a creative spirit that is showcased in the many art galleries, public artworks, artisan shops and markets along the picturesque North West coast. The imposing silhouette of Barn Bluff against pastel, dusk skies as seen from the winding boardwalk of Waterfall Valley on @Tasmaniasnorthwest's iconic #OverlandTrack. The Overland is Australia’s premier alpine walk - a 65 km, six-day trek through the heart of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park - part of the magnificent Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. It's views like these of the stunning alpine landscapes and towering mountains paired with the physical challenge of the multi-day adventure that have secured its national and international reputation as one of the great wilderness bushwalks. Waking up to this. We went to bed the previous evening listening to rain on the tents and a howling wind. When we awoke, this was our surprise. What a treat!

When it's your first time seeing snow in years so you run up Cradle Mountain @tasmania instead of hike! This was our honest reaction. Thankyou to my sister and brother for making this trip one to remember forever. The imposing profile of Mount Gould in this glorious sunrise shot over a frozen oasis from @dsallai. Positioned deep within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, the Gould Plateau is most commonly accessed via a two- to three-hour walk into the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park from the northern end of Lake St Clair. An expedition into the area represents an opportunity for more experienced hikers to divert from the Overland Track and immerse themselves in the glacial tarns, twisted ranges and spectacular vistas for which the Tassie wilderness is world-renown. It's one of the many pristine and stunning regions hidden across our little state that truly needs to be seen to be believed.
