Launceston and North

By Discover Tasmania | Tasmania's north is a feast of historic streetscapes and heritage estates, rich farmland, premier cool-climate wines, fresh produce and a haven for designers and craft makers eager to talk about their work.

Hold on to your hats! - Have you even seen so much blue?... Clearly @cheekztagram visited Little Blue Lake in @northerntasmania on one of Tassie's spectacularly clear days, and was fortunate to witness to this spellbinding scene. Located between the communities of Derby and Gladstone, Little Blue Lake is a natural phenomenon resulting from the pioneering mining days of South Mount Cameron and the surrounding areas of the Far North East of Tasmania. Originally a mine hole, the lake reflects a vivid aqua blue from the minerals in its base. Now popular with locals for waterskiing, swimming is, nevertheless, not recommended due to the high mineral content in the water. It's picture perfect, Kristine - thanks for tagging #discovertasmania.

I love when the interior of a winery catches me by surprise like at Swinging Doors Winery in the Tamar Valley. I'm calling this style 'Rustic Hipster.'

Spent last night camped out way above the clouds 🙌🏻 A couple of bottles of wine, a good fire and a movie to top it all off, my idea of a pretty perfect night 👌🏻🚐❤️

Tasmania’s Central Plateau World Heritage Area is as remote as it is beautiful. It’s a place full of surprises – like the blanketing of snow the region experienced over this past weekend. It’s also home to Tassie’s latest boutique lodge accommodation, @ThousandLakesLodge, and @tassieadventurer recently got to experience both! Originally built in 1980 to train and prepare Antarctic staff for expeditions south, Thousand Lakes Lodge is located between the Walls of Jerusalem National Park and Great Lakes region. It's the perfect base for fly-fishers, adventure-seekers, and those who crave the idyllic combination of wilderness isolation and comfort. Sounds just perfect… Thanks for tagging #discovertasmania, Susan.

A pretty special capture of the Low Head lighthouse and the core of the Milky Way by @milopiapab. At the turn of the 19th century when a sail was sighted at dusk, a fire was lit and kept burning all night to keep the vessel in touch with the port. After a review of pilotage in 1827 it was resolved to build a lighthouse at Low Head. The tower was built in 1833. It was constructed of local rubble with a coat of stucco to make the structure durable and to provide a worthwhile landmark. The crown was built of freestone from Launceston. This first light was known as the 'Georgetown Station'. It is Australia's third and Tasmania's second lighthouse built. #tasmania #instatasmania #tassie #tassiepics #tasmaniagram #lowhead #lighthouse #milkyway #hobartandbeyond #clicktasmania #seeaustralia #discoveraustralia #discovertasmania #exploretasmania #exploreaustralia #amazingtasmania #amazingaustralia #australia #getlostnow #gosomewhere

"The trek in greeted me with a rainbow... on the way back I was chased away with a thunder storm." A brilliant capture from the Tamar Island wetlands by @lifeinfocusphotography. Located just 10 minutes from Launceston, the Tamar Island Wetlands is a unique wetlands reserve with a 2km wheelchair-friendly boardwalk running through it, strategically positioned so you can ogle the resident birds. The island itself also has BBQs and an elevated bird hive 😃 #instatasmania #tasmania #tassie #tassiepics #tasmaniagram #tamarvalley #hobartandbeyond #clicktasmania #seetasmania #discovertasmania #discoveraustralia #exploretasmania #exploreaustralia #amazingtasmania #amazingaustralia #australia #gosomewhere #getlostnow

The vibrant turquoise waters of Little Blue Lake in the dappled light of a winter afternoon in @NorthernTasmania. Located just metres off the main road between Derby and Gladstone in Tassie's far north east corner, the lake is a phenomenon that has resulted from the area's pioneering tin mining days. It reflects a vivid aqua blue from the minerals that occur in its base and is a must visit for those in the wukalina / Mount William National Park region. Though the miners have long since packed their bags, the lake is now a popular spot with locals and visitors alike, and well worth the stop on any Northern roadtrip. A very picturesque Bradys lookout by @lovethywalrus who says: "Even with my own eyes I struggled to distinguish this scene between reality and a handcrafted painted masterpiece as the late afternoon sun streamed through. The Tamar Valley is a charming region of northern Tassie, and also my childhood home." Thanks Paul 😃 Bradys Lookout offers beautiful views over the Tamar River and surrounding areas. There are excellent, fully accessible toilet and picnic facilities, including sheltered BBQs and a number of picnic tables. The paths to the lookouts have good surface material and width, although wheelchair users may require assistance due to the moderate gradient. #tasmania #tasmaniagram #tassie #tassiepics #instatasmania #bradyslookout #tamarvalley #clicktasmania #seeaustralia #hobartandbeyond #discovertasmania #discoveraustralia #exploretasmania #exploreaustralia #amazingtasmania #amazingaustralia #australia #gosomewhere #getlostnow

"What? Oh, do I have something in my teef?..." This shot of a snacking Bennetts wallaby taken by @simply.travel in Launceston's Cataract Gorge Reserve really made us smile! The unique location of the gorge - only 15 minutes' walk from the Launceston CBD - makes it a cherished and popular attraction for locals and visitors alike. Aside from it's incredibly cute, furry and friendly locals, the reserve features an extensive network of walking tracks and pathways, a swimming pool, a restaurant and cafe, and the longest single-span chairlift in the southern hemisphere. It's the perfect place to while away a couple of hours - or indeed a whole day - in one of the world's most unique urban settings. Thanks for tagging #discovertasmania!
