East Coast

By Discover Tasmania | Tasmania's East Coast, with its natural beauty, spectacular landscapes and long beautiful beaches, offers a completely different Australian coastal experience.  Here you'll discover the beaches of the beautiful Bay of Fires, one of Lonely Planet's top 10 regions in the world, along with historic townships, fresh seafood and friendly locals.

If you've ever had the chance to visit the quaint, seaside town of Binalong Bay on Tassie's East Coast, you'd understand why it (and its surround Bay of Fires coastline) is often called one of the world's hottest travel destinations. On morning's like this, as the sun breaks the horizon and paints these serene shores with dawn colour, it's easy to see why so many view it as such a special place. Located just 15-minutes from the town of St Helens, this beachside community is revered for its beauty, tranquility and the friendliness of its locals. The surrounding coastal landscape features rocky gullies, small secluded beaches, shore-hugging forests and the orange lichen boulders that the region has become so famous for. Sunset colours paint the skies and towering granite peaks of The Hazards, hidden away in the Freycinet National Park. @gowrichatradi captured this stunner - one of Tassie's most iconic vistas - while exploring Tassie's Great Eastern Drive. The route, which winds its way along the coves, bays and white sand beaches of our East Coast, has been called one of Australia's greatest road trips and is a must-do for anyone looking for a self-drive adventure. From the squeaky beaches of Orford in the south, to the vibrant, orange boulders of the Bay of Fires in the north, this drive is one of the best ways to experience some of a Tassie's most spectacular scenery. The sprawling and breathtaking beauty of Wineglass Bay, tucked away deep in the heart of @eastcoasttasmania and the Freycinet Peninsula. This magnificent stretch of coastline is widely considered to be one of the world's most picturesque beach locations and is a must-see when traveling our eastern shores. The entire length of Tassie's East Coast is dotted with stunning beaches - from the iconic Bay of Fires in the north to Shelley and Spring Beaches at Orford in the south. It's no wonder the Great Eastern Drive is fast developing a reputation as one of the globe's most iconic multi-day road trips. Would you believe this vibrant gem of a lake is hidden up in Tassie's far North East corner? These are the stunning turquoise waters of Little Blue Lake, located just metres off the main road between Derby and Gladstone in @NorthernTasmania. The lake is a phenomenon that has resulted from the pioneering mining days of South Mount Cameron and the surrounding areas. It reflects a vivid aqua blue from the minerals that occur in its base and is a must visit for those in the Mount William National Park area. It's a popular spot with locals, but due to the high mineral content, we probably don't recommend taking a dip. A stunning capture from Seymour at Bicheno on Tassie's east coast by @blakesalive 😀 Blake says: “Living in Tasmania, being surrounded by raw, natural beauty every day, I feel like my love of photography was inevitable! I want to capture the natural beauty the world has to offer, and beginning that journey in Tasmania, my home state, I couldn't be luckier. It's such an incredible part of the world!” Well done Blake 😃 #tasmania #tasmaniagram #tassie #tassiepics #instatasmania #discovertasmania #discoveraustralia #amazingtasmania #amazingaustralia #exploretasmania #exploreaustralia #hobartandbeyond #gosomewhere #getlostnow #clicktasmania #seeaustralia #bicheno #seymour

Driving down a new dirt road in Tassie's late afternoon light is always a delight. 😊

The vibrant beams of the Aurora Australis dancing across the southern skies over Scamander Beach. This entrancing phenomenon is the result of electrons from solar flares colliding with the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere. While elusive and difficult to predict, the southern lights are frequently sighted across our island state, especially during the darker winter months. Like its northern cousin, the southern lights may display as a red or green static glow on the horizon or, when the solar flares are particularly strong, as dancing beams of shifting colors. However they appear, they are certainly a view we never grow tired of. Thanks for sharing this magical capture with us, @helenawisby123! #discovertasmania #AuroraAustralis #Tasmania

Spot the teeny, tiny person! When's the last time you were in a place that made you feel this small? @chilby_photography had the pleasure of having the sprawling, rock-covered landscape of Mount Amos all to himself after competing an early morning hike to the mountain's summit. This less frequented track is not for the faint-hearted, but those willing to make the trek are rewarded with 360-degree, panoramic vistas over the National Park, the iconic Wineglass Bay and beyond! Not a bad way to start the day if you ask us! Thanks for tagging #DiscoverTasmania, Brad! #FreycinetPeninsula #MountAmos #Tasmania #SeeAustralia #eastcoasttasmania

Sunset dreaming with @james_stone76 from the colourful shores of @EastCoastTasmania. This magic little post is located along the aptly named Bay of Fires, in the northern reaches of our East Coast, near the picturesque town of St Helens. The collection of secluded coves, bays, and untouched, white-sand beaches, holds the Bay of Fires firm in the hearts and minds of locals and visitors alike. The coastal seascapes and iconic orange-hued boulders provide the most atmospheric of settings no matter what the season. A stunning sunrise over Darlington Harbour on Maria Island by @jackiecox330 😃 Maria Island is a special place with something for everyone - historic ruins, sweeping bays, rugged cliffs and mountains, and remarkable wildlife. Set just off the warm East Coast, the island is easily accessed by ferry. Once on the island you will discover a place where there are no motor vehicles, no shops and no worries. Whether you're here for hours or days you can choose the kind of stay that suits you and let Maria work its spell on you. During the winter the Maria Island Ferry runs twice daily, from Triabunna (departing 10:30am and 3:30pm) and Darlington (departing 11:30am and 4:00pm). Whales & Dolphins, a Bird Watcher’s Paradise and the Tasmanian Devil. The Maria Island Ferry will guarantee to get you to the Island relaxed and protected from the wind, spray and waves. Choose your view either from inside through the surround glass windows or up on the Dolphin-Deck with 360 degree views. #tasmania #instatasmania #tassie #tassiepics #tasmaniagram #hobartandbeyond #clicktasmania #seeaustralia #mariaisland #darlington #discovertasmania #discoveraustralia #amazingtasmania #amazingaustralia #exploretasmania #exploreaustralia #gosomewhere #getlostnow #amazing_tasmania #tassiedevil #whale #dolphin

We're well outside Vodafone coverage now, so this might be the last post for a few days as we camp our way up the east coast of Tassie. Currently in the Fraycenet National Park. Having a great time - beautiful scenery everywhere you turn. Last night we had a turf war with a possum that wanted to nose dive into our chickpea curry. Haha. Stunning simplicity from @timeflees as another perfect @eastcoasttasmania day gets into full swing over the Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay. Tassie is celebrating a century of national parks in 2016 by shining a spotlight on two of our oldest national parks: Freycinet and Mount Field. So many of Tasmania’s renowned visitor experiences are located within our national parks – experiences that celebrate the unique diversity and breathtaking beauty of Tasmanian landscapes, flora and fauna. It’s no surprise, considering over forty percent of Tasmania is protected in national parks and reserves. We hope you had a memorable visit at Freycinet, Filippo. Just another day in paradise, trying always to absorb every little ounce of @tasmania's beauty! The Bay of Fires is my favourite so far. Crystal clear waters, and white sand contrast against orange-hued granite (formed by lichen) is a sight to behold. As a first time visitor it makes me SO happy places like these are part of protected conservation reserves and National Parks.

💙🐚🍊 This is @Australia! My goodness, what a fantastic first day in #EastCoastTasmania. Bay of Fires truly deserves every praise and prestige... I don't want to leave this place.

Imagining what birds see when they soar over the cliffs

As I walked along Wineglass Bay towards my campsite, this amazing glow filled the sky. The sun was letting the world know that he would be back tomorrow.. Freycinet's beaches are a beachcomber's delight! Our intertidal species include shells, crustaceans, sponges and seaweeds. Some of the seaweeds are a bright flash of colour on the beaches, such as this glorious pink weed found on Richardsons Beach after a storm. #intertidal #weed #seaweed #kelp #beach #seashore #pinkseaweed #freycinet #freycinetnp #freycinetnationalpark #eastcoasttasmania #tasmania #discovertasmania #australia

Don't know about you, but we think this looks like a pretty good spot to kick off the weekend! Soaring high above the white sands and turquoise waters of the iconic Wineglass Bay on @EastCoastTasmania. This magnificent bay lies on the edge of the town of Coles Bay, the gateway to the Freycinet National Park. The shallow waters are ideal for a lazy day of swimming or snorkeling, and the surrounding coves offer stunning opportunities for kayaking, diving and fishing. If braving the waters isn't for you, the pink granite peaks offer incredible views and easy access for a day's hike for the whole family! Meet you here?
