#NatGeoTravelStories // Follow our account this weekend as @magnumji shares images from a recent expedition to Antarctica and South Georgia Island. #6 May I Help You? The Weddell seal was discovered and named in the 1820's during expeditions led by James Weddell, the British sealing captain, to the parts of the Southern Ocean now known as the Weddell Sea. They are really plentiful and are found all over the Antarctic continent and surrounding islands. It might not look it from this photo but this seal is huge...they can be up to 1,200 pounds in weight and 10 feet in length. These seals spend most of their time swimming under the ice fishing for food and avoiding their main predators—orcas and leopard seals. They are amazing swimmers and can dive up to 2,000 feet down and stay under for up to 45 minutes. But like all mammals, they must come up for air and can often be found lounging in the sun on an iceberg. They aren't too spooked by humans in zodiacs (believe it or not), but they do tend to raise up and give you a quizzical look when they are approached. As if to say: "May I help you?"
