Deep Blue

Highways England makes much of the threat Queensbury Tunnel poses to the community, claiming that it “represents the highest risk to public safety” of the 3,200 disused railway structures it looks after. Actually it’s the *joint* highest, but we mustn’t allow accuracy to get in the way of Highways England’s hyperbole. The tunnel passes below the populated part of Queensbury at a considerable depth - about 350 feet (107 metres); in reality, the risk to ‘the community’ mostly comes from its ventilation shafts, particularly Nos. 3 & 4 which are located very close to housing. But what Highways England has surprisingly never mentioned is that these shafts are ranked 2,254th and 2,255th in terms of risk! Still, it's surely worth spending £3.6 million to push those numbers much closer to 3,200…isn’t it?

Highways England

This morning, officials from Bradford Council met Chris Grayling, Secretary of State for Transport, to present their case for more transport investment across the district. They took this opportunity to raise the issue of Queensbury Tunnel, asking him to ensure the Council is given enough time to properly assess the potential for the structure to be transformed into England’s longest underground cycleway, bringing social and economic benefits for generations to come. That would involve pausing Highways England’s questionable and premature abandonment scheme. He promised to look into it. Let’s hope he’s got a very bright torch!

In the interests of political balance...
