We could imagine ourselves as branches on the giant tree of humanity. The more we aspire to stretch toward the light, the more leaves will spring forth into the sun. The leaves in turn will take the nourishment from the light of consciousness to bring health to the whole of the tree. They will support the weight of even those dead branches that have failed to find light. But yet we should not forget that we also need to draw water from the Earth and throw down strong roots. As high as we aspire to grow, our roots need to go equally deep, grounding us in the visceral truths of our physical existence.
