Coincidentally, I just read a section on how 'compassion and the vagus nerve work closely together' in ' I Heart Me: The Science of Self-Love', by David R Hamilton.
(Amongst other things, the author recommends the Buddhist Loving-Kindness(Metta) meditation practice to develop compassion in ourselves.)
