<b>I have been saving ash from my wood burners for the veg garden, but presume not all plants will like it. Which veg thrive on the stuff and which should steer clear of it?</b><p>Wood ash, particularly from slow-growing hard wood, is rich in potash. It is easily leached away by rain, so if you have a lot to …

Plant of the week: Petunia 'Black Cherry'

<b>What is it?</b> Petunias are often dismissed as pub garden plants: hanging basket-dwellers with gaudy stripes that look over the top in a domestic setting. But a new generation of petunias offers a more stylish palette of colours, including this inky, maroon-black variety, which should be filled with …

How to Make the Perfect Lobster Roll

<b>I have to credit Dr. Claw</b> for teaching me how good a lobster roll can be. The infamous Brooklyn "lobster pusher"—the guy who won fame and no small degree of notoriety for illegally selling lobster rolls out of his apartment—gave me the first one I ever liked: A warm, garlicky tube of soft, delicate …

APOD: The Eskimo Nebula from Hubble and Chandra (2013 Jul 30) Image Credit: X-ray: NASA/CXC/IAA-CSIC/N. Ruiz et al.; Optical: NASA/STScI http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130730.html Explanation: In 1787, astronomer William Herschel discovered the Eskimo Nebula. From the ground, NGC 2392 resembles a person's head surrounded by a parka hood. In 2000, the Hubble Space Telescope imaged the Eskimo Nebula in visible light, while the nebula was imaged in X-rays by the Chandra X-ray Observatory in 2007. The above combined visible-X ray image, with X-rays emitted by central hot gas and shown in pink, was released last week. From space, the nebula displays gas clouds so complex they are not fully understood. The Eskimo Nebula is clearly a planetary nebula, and the gas seen above composed the outer layers of a Sun-like star only 10,000 years ago. The inner filaments visible above are being ejected by strong wind of particles from the central star. The outer disk contains unusual light-year long orange filaments. The Eskimo Nebula spans about 1/3 of a light year and lies in our Milky Way Galaxy, about 3,000 light years distant, toward the constellation of the Twins (Gemini). http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2013/ngc2392/ Starship Asterisk* • APOD Discussion Page http://asterisk.apod.com/discuss_apod.php?date=130730 #APOD
