***Plants compete for Nutrients*** How to do we prevent algae without any mechanical filtration? Reduce the nutrients by growing plants. A couple of things compete for nutrients in a pond, water plants and algae. Its easy if your algae is out of control just add more water plants! Please note these are water lily flowers and are not the best plants for removing nutrients out of the water but they do out of the silt and sludge on the bottom of the pond. Water Lilies do block out a lot of light from algae which is another way to reduce the algae growth. http://www.anypond.com/pond-products/water-gardening.html

Did you know that impatiens (yes, the regular annual flowers) grow well when planted bare root into the gravel of a pond or stream? They make an excellent marginal aquatic plant and add beautiful color and lush texture to your water feature. What say? Could you live with this in your backyard?

Having a boulder coming out from the pond's subsurface is a great way to lend some natural looking credibility to your man made project!
