Ribollita on Flickr

Ribollita
Because it is the time of year when warming vegetable soup is just the thing, and this is my favorite. It’s called Ribollita because it’s ideal when “reboiled”. It’s lovely and bright the first night, but when reheated as leftovers the flavors have deepened and it’s even better. Following is how my mom makes it:
2–3 carrots, chopped
2 celery stalks, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, smashed
2 bunches of cavolo nero (lacinato/black kale), shredded
2 cans cannellini beans
1+ qt …

In the holiday baking department: Speculatius / Speculaas

If you’re in the Netherlands (I don’t say Holland, because you might be in the Netherlands without necessarily being in Holland) and you’ve ordered coffee after a meal or a snack, odds are strong that this is the cookie / biscuit that will come along with it. They seem to be everywhere over there.
For most of us who make it at home, this would be a cookie-cutter cookie, but on the Continent they’re likely to turn up in quite ordinary shapes — rectangles or squares — that are ornamented with …

Excuse me while I throw this down, I’m old and cranky and tired of hearing the idiocy repeated by people who ought to know better.
Real women do not have curves. Real women do not look like just one thing.
Real women have curves, and not. They are tall, and not. They are brown-skinned, and olive-skinned, and not. They have small breasts, and big ones, and no breasts whatsoever.
Real women start their lives as baby girls. In the Home Baking dep't again: wholemeal scones

Per this post of the other day, I’ve been looking for ways to boost my wholegrain consumption. This morning I wanted something with my tea, but there was no whole wheat bread thawed, so I thought, “Well, scones perhaps?”
Then I improvised something, and it came out pretty well. The outsides are delightfully crunchy (I’m going to have trouble keeping Peter away from these…) and the insides are nice and tender.
Recipe under the cut.
There is no sugar or other sweetening in these, as I was trying to …

In the Recipe Dep't: High Fiber Bread

Over the last ten years or so I’ve gradually picked up about twenty-five pounds of weight I don’t need, due to sheer laziness about my diet and exercise situation, and nothing else: it’s way too easy for a writer to go unconscious about his or her eating habits while doing very sedentary work. When it started getting to the point this last month where a sudden spike in the weight started giving me problems with one of my hips — just due to everything being too far out of balance – I abruptly …

Churros are already awesomely delicious, so wonderfully fried and sweet, but Jasmine of Chica Chocolatina took churros to a whole new level by coming up with a receipe for Churro Waffles.
But wait, Jasmine didn’t stop there. The response to her Churro Waffles was so great that she took her kitchen wizardry one mouthwatering step farther. She combined the crispy cinnamon and sugar-coated goodness that is a churro with the warm, fruity heaven that is apple pie by creating, you guessed it, Churro …
