The Bridge By Gabriel Carpes

From our reader "Tazz" Torres, Jr. .. Mr. Karns, I am new to your FB page and I wanted to say this is a humbling experience to see all these photos and comments. I am a Fellow Western New Yorker, born and raised in Dunkirk, NY south of Buffalo. After I graduated in 1989, I decided to join the United States Marine Corps and rose from Private (E1) to the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant (E9) and I recently retired in 2014 due to health conditions. When the tragic events happened on September 11, 2001, I was on recruiting duty as a Gunnery Sergeant (E7) and happen to walk out of my office and ask a potential enlistee to come in when I saw the news on our tv at the MEPS. At first I thought it was an accident and I quickly informed my co-worker to come and see this. As we were watching the 2nd plane flew into the WTC at that time I remember saying "Holy Shit We Are Being Attacked" We then told the future enlistees to stand fast and I remember the MEPS Commander making a speech throughout the intercom to notify us all of this tragic event. The MEPS came to a halt as we all gathered around to see and hear what was actually going on. We then hand a MEPS team meeting and at that time I was wondering if we were going to close down and send everyone home to include the future enlistees. We were told We Will Stay Open and continue Our Mission so Our Condolences to all the victims and their families in this dark time. They asked if anyone had family in NY and if so to get the military members information. If we could please allow them to go home to check on their loved ones. The rest please focus on the mission that is currently going on. All senior MEPS military Liaisons call your Commanding Officers to see what the plan of attack will be the rest of the day. We called our CO he said he will have a mandatory conference call and will put out guidance from the Commanding General who will get guidance from the Commandant Of The Marine Corps as it is filtered down to the last Private. You know we didn't shut down we actually had more enlistees that day, Americans coming forward wanting to join to fight against however is trying to attack America!!! This brings chills to my bones every time I think about it. Well after 20+ honorable years in the US Marines I retired and have a new mission in life. Having family all over New York State to include NY City, I ride my motorcycle in Honor of Our Fallen. I am Deputy Commander "Tazz" (Domingo Torres Jr., USMC Retired) riding with the Veteran Enforcers Motorcycle Association (VEMA) Jacksonville, NC Chapter. Please see our website and Facebook Chapter page of what we are all about, WWW.VEMA-USA.COM and can find our Facebook page under Chapters. Anyways the reason I was writing not only to thank you but know we have been riding for the Military, Law Enforcement, Firefighters, 1st Responders in so many events and I cherish and Honor all of our events we attend. The WTC Iron Beams from 9/11 is everywhere. We have our own 9/11 WTC Iron Beam and I was wondering how were we so blessed to have been given this Sacred WTC Iron Beam for the 9/11 Remembrance here in Jacksonville, NC? When this sacred WTC Iron Beam could have gone anywhere. Our VEMA Chapter rode last year in the We Will Never Forget 343 Ride hosted by the Red Knights, Blue Knights and there were over 400 riders last year and this year was probably close to that number. Again I know the area where I live "We Will Never Forget" and we have a Memorial for 9/11, Beirut Barracks Bombing Memorial is another one that hit hard in this community because of the 241 who died in the blast over 200 were from Jacksonville, NC military units deployed in the Peace Mission. We also have the Onslw Vietnam Veterans Memorial and many other Memorials all important to many of us. I Just wanted to say thank you again for sharing your page with the World to see America Is Still Strong, We Will Never Forget. VEMA, Riding For Those Who Saw More!!!

Have a spectacular night!
