Large crack in the ground appears in Mexico Apparently summer, 2014 is the season of “weird holes appearing in the ground”. First, likely as a result of methane explosions, several large crater-like features appeared in the ground in Siberia; now we have this feature. This crack is up to 5 meters across, 8 meters (>25 feet) deep, and a kilometer long. The most obvious cause of such a feature would be movement on a fault in an earthquake, but a feature like this should have been noted on seismographs if that happened, the curved nature of this crack isn’t consistent with the shape of most faults, and there’s no obvious evidence that the rocks on either side of the crack were displaced. Instead, local geologists have suggested that this is probably some version of a sinkhole that formed on top of an underground stream. A stream flowing through rock formations below could easily take a curved path, have tributaries to the sides, and cause a collapse without displacing the rocks on either side. In this case, the collapse would probably be a consequence of erosion; during the times of year when water flows are high, water pressure could support the ground, but perhaps now during a drier season, dropping water levels in an underground stream could have removed the support at the surface, causing it to collapse. The Salar de Atacama. Located in the world's driest area of northern Chile, where some places have never seen recorded rainfall, these free standing lakes dot the landscape of the altiplano. Having no exit, they concentrate the salts leached out of the surrounding Andes by orographic rainfall as the lakes evaporate in the arid climate. Sitting between two mountain ranges, this 3,000 km square salar at 2,300 metres altitude, the country's largest, varies considerably in size depending on the amount of rain in the catchment area, though it is also fed by springs at its northern end. The area is geologically dynamic, combining active volcanoes such as Licambur (see http://tinyurl.com/m4b23ll), continued Andean uplift, and occasional floods from the surrounding mountains. The salars are a source of salt for the remote communities of the altiplano, and also contain valuable lithium deposits. Flamingos live in the salar, feeding off extremophile algae.
