I made it! #Everestbasecamp #Nepal #Himalayas #hiking #mountains

Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz A cave on the Jordanian shore of the Dead Sea is lined with a thick layer of salt crystals and stalactites from the splashing of wind-driven waves . The water in the Dead Sea is some of the saltiest in the world, with seven times the salt content of the sea. To get this view, I poked my head down through a hole in the back of the cave at sunset and watched as a solitary drop of salty water to fell to the surface. While most people perceive deserts as wastelands, to me they are exquisitely beautiful places in need of protection. To see more visit @geosteinmetz

Ryan Deboodt (@rdeboodt) here continuing my week long takeover of @smithsonianmagazine presenting my work in the caves of Phong Nha Ke Bang national park in central Vietnam. There are surprisingly not that many speleothems (formations) in Hang Son Doong due to massive flooding, but when there are they are huge! Take this stalagmite for example. It's nearly 60 meters tall! Sometimes it's difficult to get a sense of scale in these photo so be sure to find the person in the photo!

In the shadow of 13,063-foot #WheelerPeak in #GreatBasin National Park (#Nevada), 5,000 year old bristlecone pine trees grow on rocky glacial moraines. Experience the solitude of the desert, the smell of sagebrush after a thunderstorm and the beauty of #LehmanCaves. The area boasts some of the darkest night skies left in the United States, making for some great #stargazing. #NationalPark Service photo.
