APOD: A Supercell Storm Cloud Forming over Wyoming (2014 May 21) Video Credit: Basehunters (BasehuntersChasing) Music: Empire (Shakira) http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap140521.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoO89cqDgJU Explanation: How do supercell storm clouds form? Pictured above is a time-lapse video taken last Sunday detailing the formation of one such violent supercell in eastern Wyoming, USA. Starting as part of a large and dark thunderstorm complex, the supercell comes together along with a large rotating updraft of air known as a mesocyclone. Mesocyclones form during rapid changes in wind speed and direction with height and can produce torrential rain, damaging hail, swirling winds, and sometimes tornadoes. Storm watchers are seen studying, imaging, and ultimately running from the developing storm cloud during the video. During the middle part of the video, the kilometer-wide supercell can be seen swirling ominously with a nearly flat bottom. Toward the end of the video, another swirling supercell cloud forms but then quickly dissipates. http://www.facebook.com/basehunters http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqAWcfd0BJBgCW8iyOLOF3g http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_(Shakira_song) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shakira Starship Asterisk* Poll: Have you seen this video before? http://asterisk.apod.com/viewtopic.php?t=33429 Starship Asterisk* • APOD Discussion Page http://asterisk.apod.com/discuss_apod.php?date=140521 #APOD

How a human lung is kept alive and breathing for a transplant

Lung in a box. Very cool.<p>To extend the time an organ can last before it’s transplanted into a recipient, engineers have developed the Organ Care System — which is essentially a box pumping blood and oxygen to the lung.<p>What’s especially neat about the OCS is that they can actually be used to improve imperfect donor lungs by flushing it with antibiotics and nutrients. Like refurbishing a lung, sort of. Putting donor lungs through the OCS helps increase and improve the number of potential donor …

Fractal Biology

The gravitational orbit of any moon, planet, star or galaxy forms a helix, when you view it traveling through a time dimension

<b>The gravitational orbit of any moon, planet, star or galaxy forms a helix, when you view it traveling through a time dimension.</b> A 3-dimensional helix is a ‘slice’ of the 4-dimensional shape of the orbit of a planet; Y is a time dimension, X and Z are space dimensions. One 2D slice of a 3D helix is a circle, another is a wave. One 3D slice of a 4D helix is a sphere; a planet in a specific moment of time.<p>Interesting patterns are revealed when you start thinking about the 4-dimensional shapes of …
