"Mater dolorosa" (first part of my serie on Œdipe) (pencil and paint on heavy paper, 18in X 24in/46X61cm) This is the first part of my serie on Œdipe. The suffuring mother is a universal theme also used for pietas in religious art. In here, Œdipe is not blind yet, but he knows he killed his father and that his wife is also his mother. This forbidden love is tormenting both of them, she will end up hanging and Œdipe will gouge out his own eyes. It can also be seen as the traditional and religious sense of the Mater Dolorosa, the mother crying for her child who was crucified.
