Why good people do bad things

(CNN) — Most of us want to do the right thing. We don't want to steal office supplies or lie on an expense report. But we all face temptations, and sometimes we give in to them. A new study suggests that being aware of these temptations, and thinking about their long-term consequences, could help …

U.S. Iran bill makes nuclear deal harder, but not impossible | Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A compromise allowing the U.S. Congress to vote on a nuclear deal with Tehran may prompt Iranian negotiators to drive a harder bargain, but does not drastically weaken President Barack Obama’s ability to deliver on a final agreement.
U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Secretary …

Juba is the sprawling, bustling capital of South Sudan, a country that became independent in 2011 after decades of civil war with the North. The #RollingStones are releasing a deluxe edition of ‘Sticky Fingers’ on May 26th, and fans that see the band this summer might get to experience the 1971 record in its entirety. "We're floating the idea of playing the whole album," #MickJagger tells @RollingStone. "At the very least, we'll play the songs we don't normally play.”... Jagger isn't totally convinced that playing the whole album in stadiums is a wise idea. "It's a really great album," he says. "But it has a lot of slow songs. Normally in a show we'd just do one or two ballads. ‘Sticky Fingers’ has about five slow songs. I'm just worried that it might be problematic in stadiums. Maybe we'd play it and everyone would say, 'Great,' but maybe they'll get restless and start going to get drinks.” From Photograph by Terry O'Neill

Located just a few hours outside Los Angeles, San Diego, Las Vegas and Phoenix, #JoshuaTree #NationalPark in #California is a true #desert wilderness. Two distinct environments -- the Mojave and the Colorado deserts -- come together in @joshuatreenps. Joshua trees dwell in the higher elevations of the #Mojave, while creosote bushes and cholla cactus dominate the lower Colorado desert. #Sunset photo by Jaganath Achari (

Hello Smithsonian Instagram followers! I'm Ryan Deboodt (@rdeboodt), a photographer specializing in caves. This week I'll be taking you on a journey through the caves of Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park in Vietnam which includes the world's largest cave, Hang Son Doong. Can't wait! This was the only photo I could find of myself (definitely like being behind the camera and not in front!) of me in a glacier cave on Mt Hood in Oregon.

She may look beautiful, but Earth is in danger. To truly appreciate what's at stake as global temperatures rise, it's necessary to view the wonders of the planet — from #volcanoes to the mysteries of the deep #sea. Here we see the #northernlights over #KhibinyMountains, Murmansk region, #Russia. Click the link in our profile to see a photographic journey of planet Earth. #ExploreEverything (Image: Corbis)

A dust devil forms on a field in Thermal, #California. After a winter of record-low snowfalls, the state’s four-year #drought has reached crisis proportions. @nytimes photographer Damon Winter boarded a helicopter in Thermal on Friday and flew above the Coachella Valley to capture an #aerial view of the area. “From a visual standpoint, you’re looking for something really graphic and striking,” he said. We’ll share more images from this series tomorrow. #nytweekender

Ryan Deboodt (@rdeboodt) here on my @smithsonianmagazine takeover taking you on a journey through the caves in Phong Nha Ke Bang in central Vietnam. In Hang Son Doong there is sometimes a lake that forms near the exit of the cave. This lake can appear and disappear quickly, just a few days after I took this photo all the water was gone and all that was left was a muddy trench.

Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz A cave on the Jordanian shore of the Dead Sea is lined with a thick layer of salt crystals and stalactites from the splashing of wind-driven wave . The water in the Dead Sea is some of the saltiest in the world, with seven times the salt content of the sea. To get this view, I poked my head down through a hole in the back of the cave at sunset and watched as a solitary drop of salty water to fell to the surface. While most people perceive deserts as wastelands, to me they are exquisitely beautiful places in need of protection. From #DesertAirBook by @geosteinmetz #HolyLand #PromisedLand #WaterCrisis
