Elon Musk's Hyperloop Could Be Just 10 Years Away

Hyperloop, the ultra-fast tube transport dreamed up by SpaceX founder and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk, could be ready for passengers in as few as 10 years.<p>In a 76-page report released on Dropbox on Thursday, a new startup called Hyperloop Transportation Technologies laid out plans for building …

Is 'Interstellar' An Antidote To Humanity's Space Apathy?

It may be set in the distant future, but the movie highlights the issues that stymie space travel today.<p>A few years ago, I caught a glimpse of one of the biggest obstacles to space exploration. In a movie theater line, I overheard two people discussing the concept of building a human base on our …

Isolation and hallucinations: the mental health challenges faced by astronauts

The sight of the entire Earth, visible to the naked eye, has had a profound effect on those who have seen it. Astronaut William McCool described it as “beyond imagination”, and many have written how space flight permanently altered how they saw their place in the universe. For mission control, the …

Mussels Inspire A Glue That Works Underwater

It's the strongest bio-inspired, waterproof adhesive yet.<p>There's a new prototype glue that sticks like mussels to a rock—literally. The glue, which works underwater, incorporates proteins that mussels normally use to adhere to rocks, jetties, and larger sea critters. But the manmade adhesive isn't …

APOD: Laniakea: Our Home Supercluster of Galaxies (2014 Sep 10) Image Credit: R. Brent Tully (U. Hawaii) et al., SDvision, DP, CEA/Saclay http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap140910.html Explanation: It is not only one of the largest structures known -- it is our home. The just-identified Laniakea Supercluster of galaxies contains thousands of galaxies that includes our Milky Way Galaxy, the Local Group of galaxies, and the entire nearby Virgo Cluster of Galaxies. The colossal supercluster is shown in the above computer-generated visualization, where green areas are rich with white-dot galaxies and white lines indicate motion towards the supercluster center. An outline of Laniakea is given in orange, while the blue dot shows our location. Outside the orange line, galaxies flow into other galatic concentrations. The Laniakea Supercluster spans about 500 million light years and contains about 100,000 times the mass of our Milky Way Galaxy. The discoverers of Laniakea gave it a name that means "immense heaven" in Hawaiian. http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/ http://www-centre-saclay.cea.fr/en http://dx.doi.org/10.1038/nature13674 http://arxiv.org/abs/1409.0880 Starship Asterisk* • APOD Discussion Page http://asterisk.apod.com/discuss_apod.php?date=140910 #APOD

APOD: The Lagoon Nebula in Stars Dust and Gas (2014 Sep 24) Image Credit & Copyright: Remus Chua (Celestial Portraits) http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap140924.html Explanation: The large majestic Lagoon Nebula is home for many young stars and hot gas. Spanning 100 light years across while lying only about 5000 light years distant, the Lagoon Nebula is so big and bright that it can be seen without a telescope toward the constellation of Sagittarius. Many bright stars are visible from NGC 6530, an open cluster that formed in the nebula only several million years ago. The greater nebula, also known as M8 and NGC 6523, is named "Lagoon" for the band of dust seen to the left of the open cluster's center. A bright knot of gas and dust in the nebula's center is known as the Hourglass Nebula. The featured picture is a newly processed panorama of M8, capturing five times the diameter of the Moon. Star formation continues in the Lagoon Nebula as witnessed by the many globules that exist there. http://celestialportraits.com/ Nebulas and Star Clusters Wall Calendar: http://friendsofapod.org/?page_id=42 Starship Asterisk* • APOD Discussion Page http://asterisk.apod.com/discuss_apod.php?date=140924 #APOD
