"I traveled eight hours by bus, train, and taxi until I finally reached my destination, so I was left with just half an hour there. I had seen many pictures but never expected it to be as beautiful as it was; everything felt somewhat fake. No questions asked, those 30 minutes were more than worth the 16 hours of traveling."

For Russian photographer Kristina Makeeva (@hobopeeba), Orthodox Christmas, celebrated on January 7, offers an opportunity for reflection. “This holiday is another reason to look back to my country’s history which is inextricably entwined with the Orthodox faith,” Kristina says. Instead of heading to church, Kristina prefers to stroll through iconic sites like Moscow’s Red Square, capturing deeply saturated, dramatic photos of sparkling winter nights. Photo by @hobopeeba

Norwegian photographer Stian Klo (@stianmklo) does not need to leave his living room to catch a glimpse of the northern lights. Capturing them, however, is a little more complex. “It’s a lot of trial and error and taking chances,” says Stian. Once the right conditions are in place — a solar storm paired with clear skies — Stian goes out in search of his ideal setting. “I compose my shots as regular landscape shots, and the aurora is just the icing on the cake,” he says. Stian also welcomes the challenge of taking photos when a landscape is transformed by ice and snow. “It forces the photographer to work the scene,” he explains. “The compositions are less obvious, and you really have to push boundaries.” Photo by @stianmklo

"Reaching the top of the mountain amidst the clouds was like being in heaven. Looking out, you feel the world has grown immensely big, filled with so many places to see. Looking down, however, you feel the world shrink to a size small enough for you to discover all those places — like you could fly anywhere."
