Over thousands of years, #LakeSuperior carved out caves in the sandstone cliffs of the #Wisconsin lakeshore. Today, when conditions are right, you can hike or paddle out and see these remarkable formations clad in snow and ice at #ApostleIslands #NationalLakeshore. For current information, go to http

Photograph by Michael Yamashita @yamashitaphoto - A Torii gate marks the entrance to Meiji Shrine and garden, a major landmark and tourist icon in the Shibuya district in Central Tokyo. This 70 acre forested area of more than 100,000 trees is my favorite spot to 'chill' in the midst of this most densely populated city. A little "paradise beach" that I enjoyed (and photographed) for @natgeo in the beautiful but threatened Mata Atlantica, south of Rio de Janeiro. Go to @mattiasklumofficial to meet the reclusive Kinkajou, a lovely nocturnal creature with a tongue that'll put Gene Simmons to shame... The ephiphytic bromliads clinging on to the branches, waves caressing the beach, the light. Fantastic place! The Atlantic Forest still remains extraordinarily rich in biodiversity and endemic species. Unfortunately many are today threatened with extinction. Nearly 40 % of its "higher" plants and up to 60 % of its vertebrates are endemic species, meaning they are found only here and nowhere else in the world. More than 250 species of birds, mammals and amphibians have become extinct as a result of human activity in the past 400 years. Today more than 11,000 species of plants and animals are threatened in the amazing Atlantic Forest. #savemataatlantica #riodejaneiro #brasil #biodiversity #mataatlantica #earthsummit #agenda21 #src #wwf #unitednations #sustainability #conservation #ecology @natgeo @thephotosociety

#LonelyPlanet photographer, @footloosefotography, took this stunning shot of the #LemaireChannel in the #Antarctic Peninsula. This steep-sided channel - just 1600m (5250ft) wide - runs for 11km (7mi) between the mountains of Booth Island and the Peninsula. So photogenic that it's been dubbed 'Kodak Gap', the passageway is only visible once you're nearly inside it. The channel was first navigated by the Belgian de Gerlache in 1898 and named after a Belgian explorer of the Congo. #travel

As the sun sets on 2015, I look back upon what for me was a most meaningful but troubling year. Meaningful because I started this Instagram account in order to share photos and stories from my relatively brief but always exciting career as a music photographer. Meaningful upon the publication of the "Groupie" book with its warm reception by lovers of both groupies and photography. Meaningful as I welcomed many new friends (both real and cyber) into my life over the past 12 months. Troubling as I reflect upon the state of the world with its decidedly unbalanced distribution of the planet's and society's assets. Troubling in that global killing continues to trump [pun intended] global peace. Troubling as our country speeds down the road of political hate and economic confusion toward visibly observable mediocrity. Troubling as we continue to decimate our home, our "nest," the planet Earth. Astrology notwithstanding, it's impossible to predict what 2016 holds in store for us. Fingers crossed that sanity and compassion return as guiding lights to show us the way... From a fellow traveler, I wish you all a joyous, peaceful and blissful new year. #fotobaron #rollingstone #therollingstoneyears #iconicimagesnet

Photo by @daviddoubilet Swimming for Its Life. A sea turtle #hatchling paddles for the open sea at dusk in the Gardens of the Queen, National Park, Cuba. It is a race for survival. The turtle will search for the protective cover of floating weed to hide from hungry birds and fish. Very few sea turtles survive the race. There are seven species of sea turtles, nearly all of them endangered. Watch for the @natgeo story about Gardens of the Queen, Cuba. Diving here is like diving in a time machine that takes you back to a time when the reefs hum with life. @thephotosociety #ocean #nature #seaturtle #baby #life #beauty #cuba for #moreocean follow @jenniferhayesig and @daviddoubilet

Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz This photograph was taken from the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, looking uptown. It’s reminiscent of Berenice Abbott’s famous Night View, 1932, taken from the same vantage point but looking downtown. Abbott was revealing a side of the city that people weren’t so familiar with as they are now: The nightscape of thousands of tiny lit windows making a net of dotted lines. Today, the buildings are denser—only a tiny patch of West 38th Street is visible here—and the window shapes more varied. To see more from the New York Air project visit @newyorkairbook
