Flying Saucers, Supersonic Parachutes & Rockets, oh my! This week, NASA's Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD) project will fly a rocket-powered, saucer-shaped test vehicle into near-space from the U.S. Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, #Hawaii. This experimental flight test is designed to investigate breakthrough technologies to benefit future Mars missions, including those involving human exploration. The first launch opportunity is the morning of June 3. NASA TV will carry live images and commentary of LDSD engineering test. The test vehicle itself carries several onboard cameras. It is expected that video of selected portions of the test, including the rocket-powered ascent, will be downlinked during the commentary.
