Next up in film moments from the career of Judy Garland. MGM took a leap of faith from Director Vincente Minnelli and in 1944 cast Judy in her first somewhat adult role as Esther Smith in "Meet Me in St Louis". Judy, who was used to playing teenagers alongside Mickey Rooney, had achieved superstar status at the box office and on the radio Hit Parade. Legend has it that before this scene from the film was shot, Minnelli spent half a day trying to coax Judy out of her dressing room to film this scene, while the entire cast and crew waited, and waited, and waited. She was terrified to go on set, was unsure whether or not she could even remember the lyrics to lip sync or where to hit her marks for the camera. Finally, after hours of positive encouragement from Vicente, she quietly appeared from her dressing room and got into the trolley. Take just a few minutes with all this in mind to watch the clip added here. This scene was shot in just one take and is a testament to her innate talent to perform at her very best, no matter what kind of torment she was going through personally. Enjoy!
