“I raise up my voice, not so that I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard.” A moving speech at the UN by Malala Yousafzai on her 16th birthday yesterday. Not just for the substance of the speech, but for its courage and undefeatable human spirit. Malala had been shot in the forehead by the Taliban in a school-bus last October, in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. She had spoken out since she was 11 for the right of girls to go to school. The attack on a young schoolgirl led to a tide of public revulsion in Pakistan against extremism. And a renewed movement around the world, for empowering every child with an education. But Pakistan still has 5 million children not attending school. Nigeria has 10 million. Most are girls. It is the greatest gap in global development in the last 50 years.
