APOD: Galaxy and Cluster Create Four Images of Distant Supernova (2015 Mar 09) Image Credit: NASA, ESA, and S. Rodney (JHU) and FrontierSN; T. Treu (UCLA), P. Kelly (UC Berkeley), and GLASS; J. Lotz (STScI) and Frontier Fields; M. Postman (STScI) and CLASH; and Z. Levay (STScI) http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap150309.html Explanation: What are the unusual spots surrounding that galaxy? They are all images of the same supernova. For the first time, a single supernova explosion has been seen split into multiple images by the gravitational lens deflections of intervening masses. In this case the masses are a large galaxy and its home galaxy cluster. The featured image was captured last November by the Earth-orbiting Hubble Space Telescope. The yellow-hued quadruply-imaged Supernova Refsdal occurred in the early universe far behind the cluster. Measuring the locations and time-delays between the supernova images should allow astrophysicists to recover the amount of dark matter in the galaxy and cluster. With patience and luck, a fifth image of the supernova will also be recovered nearby in the next few years. http://www.nasa.gov/ http://www.esa.int/ http://www.pha.jhu.edu/~srodney/ http://physics-astronomy.jhu.edu/ http://www.pa.ucla.edu/directory/tommaso-treu http://www.pa.ucla.edu/ http://astro.berkeley.edu/ http://www.stsci.edu/institute/smo/general-information/staff/biography?user=lotz http://www.stsci.edu/hst/campaigns/frontier-fields/ http://www.stsci.edu/~postman/Home.html http://www.stsci.edu/~postman/CLASH/Home.html http://www.stsci.edu/~levay/ http://www.stsci.edu/ http://spacetelescope.org/ http://hubblesite.org/ Starship Asterisk* • APOD Discussion Page http://asterisk.apod.com/discuss_apod.php?date=150309 #APOD
