Located on the Colorado Plateau in northern #Arizona, the Vermilion Cliffs #NationalMonument includes a variety of diverse landscapes -- from the Paria Plateau and #VermilionCliffs to the Coyote Buttes and Paria Canyon. This remote and unspoiled 280,000-acre Monument -- a part of @mypubliclands' National #Conservation Lands -- is a geologic treasure with towering cliffs and deep canyons. The colorful swirls of cross-bedded sandstone in Coyote Buttes, which include The Wave pictured here, are an international hiking destination. Photo by Bob Wick, @mypubliclands.

Tonight, a #longexposure shows the glow from a Noctiluca scintillans algal bloom along the seashore in #HongKong. The luminescence, also called #SeaSparkle, is triggered by farm pollution that can be devastating to marine life and local fisheries, according to University of Georgia oceanographer Samantha Joye. #China (Image: AP Photo, Kin Cheung)

Photo @ladzinski / While traversing a 13,000 foot ridge in the collegiate mountains in Colorado my real concern was that the surrounding storm above me might blast me off the mountain. The wind was howling and the rocks were making a hauntingly odd crackling sound under the menacing sky. Electricity was in the air and getting down was the priority. Slowly the sky opened up on the western horizon turning the entire scene from grey to gold in an unpredicted serene landscape. I was lucky enough to snap off a dozen or so frames. A few years ago I heard my good friend @daveblackphoto say that light is the greatest influence to a photograph. I couldn't have said it any better. @natgeocreative

Striking a yoga pose at Big 4 Ice Cave Photo by @salvarezphoto (Stephen Alvarez) Avalanche debris from Washington’s Big Four mountain form the lowest level glacier in the lower 48 states. The yawning and dangerous entrance to the ice cave proves too tempting and many venture inside in spite of the threat of collapse. @thephotosociety

An all-out #blizzard has slammed the northeastern U.S. with a thick blanket of snow. Much of New England is still being battered, while #NewYork returns to normal. We asked you to share your blizzard photos using #MashaBlizzard, and rounded up some of our favorites on our site. Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - The Wulong Karst in southern China is well known for its giant dolines (sinkholes), natural bridges and caves. Although adventurers have gone deep underground to discover perviously unexplored caves, some are already known about by the native people. Our team of American explorers were shown the entrance to this cave by a local farmer (pictured), who guided us through as far as this skylight. Local knowledge and support is always really important during an expedition.

#VirginIslands National Park is a tropical paradise with breathtaking hills, valleys and beaches. With 7,000-plus acres on the island of St. John, Virgin Islands #NationalPark offers snow-white sand dotted by palm trees, coral reefs, pre-historic sites and Bay Rum Tree forests. Pictured here is the park's Trunk Bay at #sunset. Trunk Bay is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and features a 225-yard long underwater snorkeling trail. Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - North of the Wujiang River in Wulong county, China, the mountains that surround the small town of Tongzi are riddled with immense cathedral-like caverns and deep vertical pits that seem to go on down forever. This vast area of limestone awaits any intrepid explorer. Light shines all around an American explorer (pictured above) as he climbs the rope he installed in the centre of this epic cave shaft known as Xinu Attic.

#Iceland is simultaneously one of the most #beautiful and desolate #landscapes in the world. The Icelandic scenery in wintertime is typically blanketed with white ice and snow, but for a short period of time, visitors to Iceland can visit two of the most beautiful locations and opposite natural wonders on Earth. Click the link in our profile to see these wonders in all their white-hot beauty. #VatnajökullGlacier #Travel #BeautifulDestinations (Image: Lurie Belegurschi)

Happy New Year! To welcome the year of the goat, I’d like to share this view of The Great Wall of China the morning after a rare winter snow fall. I was in Yunnan Province when I received word of the snow, and drove like mad to the nearest airport, caught a redeye to Beijing, and climbed the wall before sunrise. 90% of photography is being in the right place at the right time. Share the view with a friend and tag @geosteinmetz on assignment for National Geographic magazine.

Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - During last months @NatGeo photographers seminar in DC, fellow NGM photographer @BrianSkerry told me that there is still a staggering 95% of the underwater world that remains unexplored. A huge volume of ocean left to examine and make new discoveries. Underground however, nobody knows what percentage of caverns remain unexplored, as we cannot see them from the surface. Pictured above, deep below ground in China’s Wulong County, a cave explorer swims into the unknown.

Photograph by George Steinmetz @geosteinmetz Ellis Island on an early winter morning after a few inches of snow. Most of the immigrants entered the main building at the center of this photograph straight from the ships that brought them. They answered twenty-nine questions during a stay of two to five hours, and then were released into America.
