"If a plant cannot live according to its nature, its dies; and so a man." The picture here shows a man with a compass in his head, searching for maybe where he is or where to go. When a man doesn't live by his conscience, his heart, and his mind, he is hurting himself and lost, as the man in the picture.

"Marching in admirable order over hill and dale to the wars, against their wills, ay, against their common sense and consciences, which makes it very steep marching indeed." Here he is saying when people follow the government blindly and do as their told instead of listening to what they believe is right, they do as what's in the picture and act like machines instead of men, fighting truly against themselves.

"I ask for not at once no government, but at once a better government." Thoreau doesn't think having no government would help society, but having a government that the people control, like in the picture where the people make decisions and are in control of the government.
