Photo by @davidalanharvey from the Outer Banks NC. This week a hurricane a couple of hundred miles at sea brought in huge waves shaped beautifully by an offshore breeze. Cape Hatteras is famous for over 3,000 sunken ships , yet it is these same shallow sandbars which make the waves break for adventurous surfers. Here a rider comfortably "in the barrel".

Photo @pedromcbride (Pete McBride) / On the banks of the #Ganges River in the kingdom of Ramnagar near #Varanasi, India, the king rides an #elephant - a symbol of the Hindu God #Ganesh. Despite people’s reverence and fear of domesticated elephants in India, many are poorly treated and abused. Sadly, wild ones face challenges too as habitats continue to diminish. This particular elephant seemed better kept than most but kept its distance from people - except my friend Madhav, a Hindu #monk, whose quiet softness and grace lured lumbering giant make contact. #trunk #grace #sacred #gangas2s #ambuja

People often ask if I'm teaching any upcoming photo classes and I finally am! I have a bunch of classes and workshops this month. Follow the link in my profile for more information about the classes (online and in person in Seattle and San Francisco). Let me know if you have questions. 😊

It's been a pleasure sharing my photography this week with @smithsonianmagazine. Please continue to follow me at @carltonward. We have another 1000-mile @fl_wildcorridor Expedition launching this October to connect the Everglades Headwaters near Orlando to the northern Gulf coast near Alabama. Please check it out. This photo is a favorite from the 2012 Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition from Everglades to Okefenokee. A ogeechee tupelo tree spreads its spring branches over the Suwannee River near the Florida-Georgia line. The orange color in the foreground is the product of shallow white sand shining through dark brown water flowing out of the Okefenokee Swamp. Thanks to you for following along to editors @jeffcampagna and @mollyarob for sharing this story.
