I truly think the root of this language is ableist in its implication that putting the diagnosis first somehow makes the person less human. I believe we all can logically understand that the individual is human, and we don’t need to distance ourselves from the experience in order to be more human. I think person first language is largely an attempt by allistic people to be affirming and show they are not defining the person just as their disability, but really this language is harmful because it perpetuates the idea that there is something wrong or innately dehumanizing about being disabled. This video is not to police your language, but to offer an alternative view on person first language for you to consider.
