Dramatic skies over the McLaws Line portion of the Chancellorsville Battlefield earlier this week mirror the crisis faced by Union officers here on May 2, 1863. While best known for attracting attention through skirmishing--allowing Jackson's Flank Attack to succeed--Confederates here launched an all-out assault once Jackson's attack hit, striking the Federal position from the south while Jackson hit from the west. Col. Cross held his line amid the chaos of routed Union soldiers and an attack on both fronts. Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, and Spotsylvania--this is America's battleground, where the Civil War roared to its bloody climax. No place more vividly reflects the War's tragic cost in all its forms. A town bombarded and looted. Farms large and small ruined. Refugees by the thousands forced into the countryside. More than 85,000 men wounded; 15,000 killed--most in graves unknown. Photo courtesy of Buddy Secor (Ninja Pix)

The series of summer Supermoons closed in style Monday night as the full moon hit its closest point in earth's orbit — exhibiting a larger and brighter than usual natural phenomenon. Feeling the history is part of hiking two days on the #GreatWallofChina. I got up early one morning to watch the sunrise and framed the wall winding off into the hills through the doorway of one of the crumbling towers. #aperturenyc #hotshoemagazine #gregorybarker #paulsack #yossimilo #threeshadows #curator #fraenkelgallery #canon_photos #profoto #camerawork #torchgallery #stevenlatner #hryniuk #chrisdercon #Anntenenbaum #timjefferies #salon94 #edywnnhouk #richardsandor #billhunt #wmhunt #thephotocenter #thegreatwall #simotai #jinshanling #solotravel #bnw #photo #profoto

Our Hubble Space Telescope finds big surprise in teeny tiny galaxy: A supermassive black hole with a mass 21 million times our sun. The black hole is five times the mass of the one at the center of our Milky Way galaxy. It is inside one of the densest galaxies known to date -- the M60-UCD1 dwarf galaxy that crams 140 million stars within a diameter of about 300 light-years, which is only 1/500th of our galaxy’s diameter. If you lived inside this dwarf galaxy, the night sky would dazzle with at least 1 million stars visible to the naked eye. Our nighttime sky as seen from Earth’s surface shows 4,000 stars. "I've been fixing watches in this chair for almost sixty years. It required a lot more skill in the old days. Now I pretty much just replace batteries." (Dharamshala, India)

Sometimes, all the elements come together just perfectly. P.S. Not fake rays. 😝

Though a short distance from the urban areas of Cleveland and Akron, Cuyahoga Valley National Park seems worlds away. The park is a refuge for native plants and wildlife, and provides routes of discovery for visitors. The winding Cuyahoga River gives way to deep forests, rolling hills, and open farmlands.
