Jim Balog, a #photography mentor and great friend of mine, once said that you should never be satisfied with the image you’re making. By that I think he means that you should never stop pushing yourself. Don’t put down the #camera and head back to #camp for dinner, even though it was a long day, before the sun has set and all the light is absolutely gone. The value in Jim’s advice is that it forces you to stay out there and be in position to witness those interesting moments of change—the transition from day to night, or even the transition from a #climber on the #summit to a regular guy back on the ground. You need to push yourself mentally, physically and creatively to #capture those #moments. It always seems to involve some degree of discomfort, if not downright suffering, too. Never be satisfied and never call it a day before the day is done. I believe that that is what it takes to create any lasting #photograph that stands the test of time. #VirginIslands National Park is a tropical paradise with breathtaking hills, valleys and beaches. With 7,000-plus acres on the island of St. John, Virgin Islands #NationalPark offers snow-white sand dotted by palm trees, coral reefs, pre-historic sites and Bay Rum Tree forests. Pictured here is the park's Trunk Bay at #sunset. Trunk Bay is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world and features a 225-yard long underwater snorkeling trail. Happy New Year! To welcome the year of the goat, I’d like to share this view of The Great Wall of China the morning after a rare winter snow fall. I was in Yunnan Province when I received word of the snow, and drove like mad to the nearest airport, caught a redeye to Beijing, and climbed the wall before sunrise. 90% of photography is being in the right place at the right time. Share the view with a friend and tag @geosteinmetz on assignment for National Geographic magazine.
Photograph by @paulnicklen When being chased by Leopard Seals, Emperor Penguins reach such great velocities underwater and consequently great heights when exiting the frigid Ross Sea that it looks like they are truly trying to fly. However, they are just throwing their flippers out for balance. They hit the sea ice with such force that often, these 60 to 90 pound birds knock the air out of themselves. They quickly shake it off and begin their 10 mile hike back to the colony to feed their awaiting chicks. Please follow me this week on @paulnicklen as I post a series of my favorite polar wildlife species #wildlife #nature @ElPlanetaPhoto #gratitude #penguins #beauty @natgeocreative @thephotosociety

The Brazilian city like you've never seen it. Really.
Rio de Janeiro is called cidade maravilhosa, or the "marvelous city," for a reason. "How is one melancholic in Rio de Janeiro?" asks the Brazilian writer Tatiana Salem Levy. "You lower your head, but on your right side a hill rises up, majestic; …Time-lapse Photography
