APOD: M74: The Perfect Spiral (2013 Aug 11) Image Credit: NASA, ESA, and the Hubble Heritage (STScI / AURA)- ESA / Hubble Collaboration Acknowledgment: R. Chandar (Univ. Toledo) and J. Miller (Univ. Michigan) http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130811.html Explanation: If not perfect, then this spiral galaxy is at least one of the most photogenic. An island universe of about 100 billion stars, 32 million light-years away toward the constellation Pisces, M74 presents a gorgeous face-on view. Classified as an Sc galaxy, the grand design of M74's graceful spiral arms are traced by bright blue star clusters and dark cosmic dust lanes. Constructed from image data recorded in 2003 and 2005, this sharp composite is from the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys. Spanning about 30,000 light-years across the face of M74, it includes exposures recording emission from hydrogen atoms, highlighting the reddish glow of the galaxy's large star-forming regions. Recently, many astronomers are tracking a bright supernova that has been seen in M74. http://heritage.stsci.edu/2007/41/ http://hubblesite.org/news/2007/41 http://spacetelescope.org/news/heic0719/ Starship Asterisk* • APOD Discussion Page http://asterisk.apod.com/discuss_apod.php?date=130811 #APOD

Three stargazers, located in Holland, Alabama and Michigan, exercised their passion for night sky photography to create a stunning image of Messier 27, also known as the Dumbbell Nebula or NGC 6853. http://oak.ctx.ly/r/9l0n "Using narrow band filters and very long exposures, we were able to capture the outer hydrogen and oxygen shell of the M27 nebula, which is not normally visible in amateur images," Terry Hancock (http://www.flickr.com/photos/terryhancock/show) wrote us in an email.

APOD: M8: The Lagoon Nebula (2013 Aug 17) Image Credit & Copyright: Ignacio Diaz Bobillo Explanation: This beautiful cosmic cloud is a popular stop on telescopic tours of the constellation Sagittarius. Eighteenth century cosmic tourist Charles Messier cataloged the bright nebula as M8. Modern day astronomers recognize the Lagoon Nebula as an active stellar nursery about 5,000 light-years distant, in the direction of the center of our Milky Way Galaxy. Hot stars in the embedded open star cluster NGC 6530 power the nebular glow. Remarkable features can be traced through this sharp picture, showing off the Lagoon's filaments of glowing gas and dark dust clouds. Twisting near the center of the Lagoon, the small, bright hourglass shape is the turbulent result of extreme stellar winds and intense starlight. The alluring color view was captured with a telescope and digital camera while M8 was high in dark, rural Argentina skies. At the nebula's estimated distance, the picture spans over 60 light-years. http://www.pampaskies.com/gallery3/index.php Starship Asterisk* • APOD Discussion Page http://asterisk.apod.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=31932 #APOD
