World War II Dogface William H. Birnie was born in 1924 in the state of California and entered the Unites States Army at the age of 18. He was later assigned to the 276th Infantry Regiment, 70th Infantry Division and was sent to the European Theater of Operation. In January 1945, the division received a brutal introduction to the realities of combat at Wingen-sur-Morder against the enemy including the 6th SS Mountain Division. During that bloody battle, William was captured and was kept with others prisoners in a church close by. The fight was still going on in the Vicinity of Wingen and William's left arm was hit by a piece of shrapnel before being liberated. He soon recovered and went back to his company and fought with the "Trailblazers" until the end of the war. William was discharged in January 1946. Thank you for your service William. We have not forgotten.
