Nots: We Are Nots review – lightning-quick garage-punk

(Heavenly)
Taking their cues from the Fall at their most primal, Memphis four-piece Nots have hit upon a bracingly discordant strain of post-punk. Natalie Hoffman’s hollered vocals owe much to those of Bikini Kill-era Kathleen Hanna, while Alexandra Eastburn’s oddly lurching synths add another layer …

Sophie: Product review – digital pop divorced from the analogue world

(Numbers)
Digital music is a particularly slippery genre to corral into neat theses. But a few distinct strands have recently found their way out of the margins and into the mainstream. The Masterpiece That Is Rome

The Masterpiece That Is Tuscany

In the main public square of Jacmel, a beautiful small city on the southern coast of Haiti, young men gather each afternoon to play soccer for amusement after work or school. Photo by @fotokonbit student Wilky Douze, 20. As in so many Caribbean, South American, and other nations soccer is huge for Haitians. Besides their own national team Haitians are also big fans of Brazilian teams. Residents gather every afternoon to watch these matches until the sun sets and the players go home. The main square, heavily damaged in the 2010 earthquake that struck Haiti, is surrounded by newly restored houses and buildings with architecture typical of Jacmel. This town had a thriving merchant class in its hey day, made wealthy from export of coffee. Today it is called the city of artists. Wilky's photo is an outtake from the story on Haiti as seen by Haitians and shot by Fotokonbit students for @natgeo in the December 2015 issue of National Geographic Magazine. The excellent story, written by Alexandra Fuller, is well worth reading for a fuller and more representative understanding of Haitii, is entitled Haiti on Its Own.
