Happy Birthday Gene Wolfe! "We believe that we invent symbols. The truth is that they invent us; we are their creatures, shaped by their hard, defining edges. When soldiers take their oath they are given a coin, an asimi stamped with the profile of the Autarch. Their acceptance of that coin is their acceptance of the special duties and burdens of military life—they are soldiers from that moment, though they may know nothing of the management of arms. I did not know that then, but it is a profound mistake to believe that we must know of such things to be influenced by them, and in fact to believe so is to believe in the most debased and superstitious kind of magic. The would-be sorcerer alone has faith in the efficacy of pure knowledge; rational people know that things act of themselves or not at all.” ― Gene Wolfe, Shadow and Claw art by Don Maitz

Happy Birthday Salvador Dali

Here is another artifact. The story of this photo after it was taken is rather odd. It was purchased by a collector who believed no one should see it. His reasoning was along the lines of "I paid for it, why should I show it to anyone?" After I bought it I did send it to Joshi, for inclusion in his upcoming book (20 years ago) I don't know if he used it or not. The photo was taken by Lovecraft's wife and the original was very tiny. I spent quite some time enlarging it at very high resolution and repairing some minor damage. The text on the front was scanned from the back of the photo and is in his wife's handwriting. Unless Joshi did use it in the book, this is the first time the public has seen this photo. Lovecraft With Cats. My long term goal is to have it made into prints.
