Sometimes we make such a big deal about our thoughts. We take them so seriously and we make up all sorts of stories, which we believe are real and solid, and which hold on to so dearly. But in the end, thoughts and stories are just the products of our mind. They come and they go. Ask yourself: Where are all the thoughts you had this morning? Or yesterday? Apart from being a memory, they don’t exist. They are fleeting, impermanent, and constantly changing. Once, during a retreat with my students, everyone was talking about their thoughts, and I remember asking myself: “Why do we make such a big deal about our thoughts? After all, does anybody else even see them? Nobody else does.” Our thoughts just appear to us. Even then, as soon as we look for them, they’re gone. They only problem is that we keep grasping after them. As the great Indian Buddhist master Tilopa told his disciple Naropa: "It’s not the appearances that bind you, but the grasping. Therefore abandon grasping, Naropa, my son." Whatever thoughts arise, if we don’t grasp onto them, they will just dissolve and settle all on their own, quite naturally, just like the waves that arise and then settle, back into the ocean. ~Lerab Ling, 26 April 2015
